I don't have any suggestions for specific CU, but yes, do.
I opened checking and savings with a local CU, to get started, now have a LOC, may look for a CC, much later an auto loan. The lending rates seem to be better, more transparent than regular banks.

Redwood Credit Union is very good as is S F Fire. I would lok into those. It's been a while since I've lived there. Good luck with your search and I whole heartedly agree that establishing a relationship with a credit union is a good idea.

Hey guys,
Was just wondering if it's a good idea to establish a relationship with a local credit union.
Credit unions and their offerings aren't all the same so there isn't a generic answer for that question. It can be a good idea if a credit union has products that would be useful to you.

Can i open an account with a CU that isnt in Cali and is it a bad idea as opposed to local?
Sure you can. Again, whether or not it's a good or bad idea all depends on whether or not a given credit union has products that would be of use to you. Credit unions are not a panacea and differ from one another.
