Disputing and DV...what to do first?

Do you dispute a CA first through the CRA or is better to DV the CA first? This is for a collection from Palisades for an AT&T wireless account. I had no idea about this since I have always had AT&T wireless, and when they switched to Cingular, and now they are back as AT&T. Yes it is past the federal SOL for cell phones.

DV first.

Disputing gives them a heads up and they get their ducks in a row AND during a dispute with CRA, they have the right to ask YOU for supporting documents/evidence to support your claim.

But now I am wondering....I disputed a CA about a medical bill from 2001. I said I had no knowledge of this account. I had insurance back then and then lost my job and then moved to California and never received anything. Was this okay to do or did I mess up?
