You'd be surprised what Stanley Steemer can do for a few hundred bucks. My folks sold the house I grew up in a few years ago. Realtor really pushed them to replace the 20 year old white carpet. Wasn't in their budget. They slapped on a fresh coat of paint themselves and had the carpets cleaned and it worked.
Person that bought it gut renovated it anyway. People want what they want and would often rather do it themselves and be able to pick everything out.
