Signature on letters for DV, GW, etc...

This may seem like a stupid question, but...
 
Why shouldn't you sign the letter and only type it?  What's the reasoning behind that?  I don't think I've read that anywhere.

because your sig can be scanned and then placed into any document - you would be able to prove it it is not an 'original document' (but a copy) but not that it isn't your sig.
