Stolen wallet.

My car was broken into last night in my apartment parking garage.
I woke up to Discover, Chase and American Express pinging me. The thief was charging up a storm!

Thanks to my credit clean up since July 2014, when my apartment (old one) was broken into by an ex boyfriend, I was quick to call and cancel the cards.

Here's the helpful info:

After cancelling cards, fraud alerted the bureaus, called the cops, got a new license, went to social security and contacted FTC. Canceled my HSA which they also tried to use. New Costco card, new AAA. New insurance. Incident report with security at apartment building.

The world has been silent since 930am.

Finally, put a lock on chex, Ex, TU and EQ. All are available online BTW. Already had Those other weird bureaus that US Bank uses locked.

The irony is DCU pre-approved me for a new car loan the night before. My old car which I paid off and took a score hit for, doesn't have an alarm.

So, I feel pretty freaking educated on how to do crisis management right now. There's some helpful steps while I wait for a slew of new cards.

Took sunglasses. Otherwise car was left messy without any more damage. Door doesn't unlock anymore. I have to climb in.

Yes, I had a small wallet in there. Yes, I learned my lesson. $60 later, everything is secured again and I'm monitoring.

Be prepared. Learn to monitor and keep your things secure!

Sorry to hear that this happened.  You seemed to have handled things well and I'm happy to see the highlighted portion.  As a former police officer, I won't have to lecture you then about leaving a wallet in a car, locked or unlocked, equipped or not equipped with an alarm, etc, etc.  Just keep in mind that it's entirely possible that the thief now knows exactly what apartment you live so take some extra personal security measures for awhile.

Also moving this to General Credit as it's not really related to rebuilding.

Re: Stolen wallet.

Silver lining  is my drivers license didn't have my current address. As for house security,  past experience has prepared me for that.  Not,q losing cards in cars,  but now that's covered!

They know my junker though. Hate the car but not financially sound to get rid of it yet.

So,  I've been broken into by house,  car, and  had my apartment burn down.   When my memoirs make Oprah book club,  please check it out. Discount for coupon code "524sucks"

All seriousness,  the FTC is a valuable resource in addition to locking credit. They offer advice and free monitoring.

California does cost to lock.  Free reports are available when fraud happens.

Fraud Alert is only 90 days. May be better to pay for locking with pin! Fraud Alert is activated by Calling 1 bureau.  Locking requires notifying all individually.

May these keywords reach another eyes so that they can be prepared.  Paying it forward.
