Applied and was approved for a home depot credit card through citi (4300 limit). I noticed when trying to make payment and setup my account it said the SSN was wrong. Customer service confirms I have a slight typo. My question is, did I just prevent this account from hitting my credit? I have not received any hard pulls nor has the account shown on my credit (credit karma, nerd wallet, wallet hub).
Customer service is making it a pain to get this updated, so on a hypothetical note, what would happen if I do nothing? Has been over 30 days since i opened the account. Since no hard pulls will this ever touch my credit if I do nothing? Would it ever go to collections (for me) if my SSN is wrong? Its not much of a balance, but I can't even pay it unless I get my SSN updated by fax, and who has a fax machine these days. I dont want to use any eFax option as I need to send my full SSN number and other details.
SSN is not the only way to find someone's credit report. They wouldn't have approved you if they couldn't find you. It will still appear on your report and the HP is probably just delayed. If you don't get them the requested info, they may close the account and it will still appear on your report as having been opened and closed.
It will report. You have at least three point match, name, DOB, address.
The issue with that is that it will add additional SS number to your report.
I've done this twice, once with Sunchrony, they asked I send copy of DL and SS card.
Second time I transposed digits during Citi app which resulted in "we'll get back to you". I called and they were able to perform verification over the phone, which involved answering a few questions about cards on my CR and reading back number from text message.
If you do nothing, account will still report, but because Citi is aware of mistake, you either help them verify the info or they will close the account (so, after reporting opening of the account, you will also end up with closed account).

Most shipping/office supply places do have the old style fax machines available for use.
Office Depo/Max, Fedex Print & Ship, UPS store, and most other mail centers, at least here in my area.
