Unauthorized Hard Inquiry From SYNCB/PAYPAL

A few days ago I received credit monitoring alerts that an inquiry had been placed on my Transunion and Experian credit reports from "SYNCB/PAYPAL".  Then only a day later, I received alerts that a new credit account has appeared on those reports from the same company with a credit limit of $3000 and a current balance of $500.

From what I can tell, this entry is related to Paypal Credit.  I haven't used Paypal to pay for anything in years and I definitely haven't applied for any credit with them (including any of that Bill Me Later stuff they try to rope people into).

This account is completely fraudulent and a bit of research on my end brought up a lot of other cases that ranged from company error to possibly identity theft.

How should I proceed to get this taken care of as soon as possible?  I'm worried that not only will I have the account and inquiry on my report but that it could start racking up late payments for that $500 balance and really wreak havoc on my credit.

Thanks for any advice anyone can provide, especially if anyone has had an experience with this exact company on a situation similar to this.

Freeze your reports now and call Sync. Then go file a police report.

@Rikkumz  Just as a precaution change your Paypal password. Call Synchronny and get the card cancelled.

That's the weird part.  When you have a Paypal credit card...there's supposed to be a section that appears in your Paypal account where you can use certain functions related to your Paypal credit account.  The Help documentation refers to this.  But there's no Paypal Credit section in my account.  And there's no record of any transaction where a Paypal credit card was used (like in order to get that $500 balance).

I also checked my recent login activity and the last login before I logged in today was back in August 2022.  And that was just to log in and get a Paypal offer code for something I saw on Slickdeals.  No purchase through Paypal.

So I don't think it was through my Paypal account.  I'm currently going through the phone runaround with Synchrony to see if they can tell me the exact method of signing up for the account and what address the card (if any) was shipped to.

I'm in a similar boat, except I didn't get alerted to the HP and it fell off my CR (account was opened and apparently closed in 2020). I tried calling Synchrony and PP to see what they had to say, neither had a record of the credit line, statements or any more information.

Was there a balance listed on the card at all for the time it was on your report?  Or just an unused credit limit?

BTW, I'm seeing a lot of stories like yours.  Where the company acknowledges it was an error (I alluded to it in the OP).  Some people trace it to the Synchrony takeover of Paypal credit accounts and reporting tradelines that simply weren't previously reported under the old management company.

I think I had an old Ebay credit card many years ago when Paypal owned Ebay.  So maybe it has something to do with that but it's being erroneously listed (like having a current $500 balance).  I'm still waiting for a call back to get more information.

Re: Unauthorized Hard Inquiry From SYNCB/PAYPAL

I misremembered, the account was actually closed in 11/2019. I'm trying to get a copy of my statements from that year, but it is not easily accessible, I had to ask in the chat and they will generate a custom statement. I honestly can't remember if I opened the PayPal credit line or not so I'm trying to get a statement before escalating to the CRAs. One potential clue that I noticed is that on my credit report the account says that it was open on 11/11/11. This to me seems suspiciously like a default number, so take that for whatever it's worth. All other info I can see on the CapitalOne version of my credit report is that it had a high balance of $40 and it was closed satisfactory by the grantor. Nothing comes up in my gmail search from PayPal from that period, though, about closing a credit line or any results for "PayPal credit."

Re: Unauthorized Hard Inquiry From SYNCB/PAYPAL

OK, I forgot to update this thread.

So when I initially called in to Synchrony using the phone number that was listed under the account in my credit report...I got a lot of runaround and confusion as to whether the account actually existed or not.  They basically just said they would look into it and get back to me.

I ended up receiving the actual card at my house a few days later.  I called the phone number on the back (different than the one on my CR) and I could actually look up the account info on their automated system (which recognized my real phone number as the one linked to the account).  So I got in direct contact with a rep through the automated workflow, told them my situation, and then got forwarded to the fraud department.  They immediately closed the account and initiated a fraud investigation.  The rep breezed through a bunch of basic questions for me and said I would receive a letter in the mail within 60 days on the outcome of the investigation.  If the account was found out to be fraudulent, the credit reporting agencies would automatically be updated.

I asked a bunch of questions (I wanted to know how my personal information was used to obtain this card) and the rep was pretty tight lipped about any additional details (probably for legal reasons).  But he did advise me to get in touch with Paypal directly and request to investigate whether there was a 2nd Paypal account fraudulenly opened in my name there.  It sounded like this situation is something they commonly deal with.  After doing some research, apparently thieves like to open Paypal accounts with people's personal information that they obtain,  then apply for Paypal credit during a purchase, because they can immediately bill it to the newly approved card without having to wait for the physical card and activate it.  In fact, on the Paypal forums, there's a ton of people who receive letters in the mail because somebody tried to do this with their information but their credit score lead to a decline.

Paypal supposedly only allows 1 personal account per individual but I don't know how strict that is or if there is a loophole if you just open a business account using your same information as a sole proprietor (you wouldn't need an EIN like an LLC).  And it doesn't look like they care about addressing how their instant credit approval system for purchases is so susceptible to easy fraud.

I will update again once I get some resolution to this thing.  In the meantime, I filed a fraud report with the FTC, alerted all 3 credit bureaus and also froze my credit report at all 3 bureaus.  I'm taking no chances going forward lol.
