how much can a credit score improve in one year/

My credit score is awful. Had medical debt and job loss. Don't have credit card debt-except a JC Penney account that is closed. Most of the bills in collections were medical debt. Once I sold my home I was able to pay the majority of the med bills off-still paying on a few. Unfortunately the damage has been done and I am trying to clean up my mess. What info should I read on where to begin the clean up? I paid my mortgage off with house sale and that brought what I owe down to a fairly small amount-yet I havent seen a score improvement. I have a friend who claimed bankruptcy and her scores are higher than mine! Any direction anyone can give is appreciated. I am a newbie learning as quickly as possible.

Varies by person.

It takes time to recover from collections.  For the remaining items you may want to read up on pay-for-deletes.  For the items you've already paid, look into goodwill letters to have them removed.  Removal isn't guaranteed but it's worth a shot.

What open accounts do you have and what shape are they in?  What's your utilization like on your revolving accounts?

You should also review all your reports to verify that there isn't any other cleanup that you need to take care of.

Scoring's not a simple and straightforward matter. It's certainly possible for a person with a BK to have a higher score than another without. Or vice-versa. No single factor determines one's credit score.

Everyone is different. I've seen people gain 200 points in a year (having baddies fall off, and not applying for new credit). For myself, I've gained 100 points over the last year.

Myfico scores.....
EX... 805 (11-10-13)
EQ... 810 (12-02-13)
TU... 810 (12-02-13)

I have a small car loan with monthly payment of $145. Other than that I have no revolving accounts. I am wondering if my rental company for the house I rent would report? I need to get a secured credit card and use it sparingly each month and pay in full. I appreciate other ideas.
