Applying Mortgage with Student Debt on REPAYE

Hi!

I'm preparing to apply for a VA Loan and I currently have student debt. The question I have is how this will be calculated into my DTI.

I'm currently on a REPAYE plan, and my calculated payment is $0 a month. This isn't forbearance, thats just my payment each month is $0.

I heard that sometimes a mortgage lender will calculate this into DTI somehow as if you were making a $500/month payment, or 1% of all of your student debt, and that there is a way around this by making a small payment each month. I would like to do this, but only if I have to.

Please let me know.

The 1% calculation is only if you are in deferment. As you have a repayment plan, it should be calculated as $0.
