Flagstar Mortgage

So I have a quick question, hoping someone can help me. I had a mortgage with Flagstar that was paid off in Aug 2022. Mr. Cooper Group acquired Flagstar in 2024. Flagstar is showing a late payment June 2022, which is incorrect. I called Flagstar yesterday to see if they could help, but said they have no records since Mr. Cooper acquired their mortgage services. I was supposedly transferred to Cooper, but was left hanging for over 15 minutes as no one came back on the line. Does anyone know what I can do about this? Like is it possible to dispute it and get the late removed since it seems no one has record of my account. I also tried looking up my account through the Cooper website and it said it found nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

Re: Flagstar Mortgage

Yes you can dispute it with the bureaus.  If they can't verify it as accurate, it should be removed.

Re: Flagstar Mortgage

I'd just call Mr. Cooper directly at 855-805-6993 rather than be transferred from Flagstar to them.

You can also email them at researchIncoming@mrcooper.com (got the information from https://www.mrcooper.com/help-center/account-help/credit-corrections), but personally I'd recommend calling them.

Just ask "Why did you report my June 2022 payment as late?" and see what their response is.  You can also ask them for a payment history so you can see how their account payment history ledger looks.

Re: Flagstar Mortgage

Thank you for your repsonses, very much appreciated! I called Mr. Cooper and emailed them, got the same response from both. They are unable to locate my account. I can't imagine this is something that is common when someone acquires mortgage services. I am at a loss for what to do, but dispute it. I'm just worried about disputing, since it could go sideways on me and wreck my scores.

Re: Flagstar Mortgage

I wouldn't dispute it yet.  I'd call Flagstar back and ask them what your Mr. Cooper loan # was after they transferred it.  Just be persistent.

Re: Flagstar Mortgage

Just a little update so far. I have called and no one can find my account. I have emailed and got a repsonse from both and they couldn't find my account. They tried everything using my name, loan #, and address of the home. It is like it never even existed. You would think it would be easy to get this removed from my report, but I'm still hesitant to dispute it since it can go bad, but if they can't find it how could they possibly verify anything through a dispute. So technically it should be deleted then. What do y'all think? Is it worth going for or should I keep trying with the companies?

This is why I suggested that you dispute it with whichever bureaus it being reported to.

Generally the only disputes that go bad are when people dispute accurate information such as a charge off, or collections where the reporting of such items has gone dormant, then gets verified as accurate, updated... and subsequently the scoring algorithms sees it as a recent event which dings scores.

If they can't verify, or prove the late payment occurred, they have to remove it from your report immediately per the FCRA.

Re: Flagstar Mortgage

I know Joe, I'm just very nervous about it going wrong. Not much goes right for me in life unless it is something I can control. If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck. I do appreciate the advice, and I will be thinking really hard on whether to dispute, or keep trying with Flagstar/Mr. Cooper just to be sure they can't find it before I dispute.

Re: Flagstar Mortgage

I've disputed an account and had the whole thing wiped, so understand your hesitation.

Do you happen to have a past credit report from the CRA that's reporting the late payment that does NOT show the payment as late? The CRAs do individually number all the reports along with the date afaik. Perhaps it was simply a month that payment was not reported (no data) and some integrated feature assumed it was late so marked it as such when your file was bought by the other company? Anyway I'd look through CRA copies you may have if i were you and see if you get lucky with proof you can forward to either party to have the late error removed without *as much* risk maybe.

Best of luck!
