I think what happens is the lender sends a Verification of Rent form to the landlord to complete and send back to the lender.
I was lucky bc they didn't need this for my house loan. I think it was bc I had been at that address over two years and my LO says "I suppose they think if there were problems it would be on your credit report".
So not all lenders require a VOR. And as ya'll know, my loan went thru by the skin of my teeth so it's not like I was some stellar-credit-applicant.
The VOR is usually needed when cancelled rent checks can not be provided.
I've been paying cash and getting a receipt - I had no idea! My landlord owns several homes and apartment buildings but he's just a slum lord. dangit and I moved from parents house to here thinking i was doing the right thing for proof of rental - i had not even thought of checks vs cash payments. duh..I should of asked! I've been here now for 6 months.

Don't stress over it too much. Start paying with checks now and submit your receipts for the payments you made via cash. At the worst the underwriter will ask for the VOR but if you have made on time payments it should not be an issue a major issue.
Pixiqueen: Thanks, I'll do that.
