What difference does that make? The downpayment assistance is the form of a second lien so no one is "giving" me anything.

That's so rude.  Just because someone needs down payment assistance doesn't mean they don't deserve a home.  She is going to be paying for it--not you so lighten up.  Besides someone on a tight budget is better off going with new construction with a warranty than a foreclosure that may require a lot of expensive repairs.
