Went to Wells Fargo tonight to take out $1000, I used my IBKR debit card and it gave me my card back, then while I can hear it counting the money.... it turned off....
the ATM then said "AMERICAN MEGATRENDS" and a sequence of #'s that I took a picture of..
on my IBKR it shows as pending and "approved purchase" took out of my spending power...
tried calling IBKR CS but they were closed.... ummmm not sure what to do?. I know IBKR will say as long as it's pending they can't do much...
Try calling them back during the day today, I don't know the specifics about IBKR's hours but it wouldn't be out of the ordinary if they only had daytime coverage and not 24 hr coverage over the weekend. If you can remember the actual or approximate time within a few minutes and be prepared to give the specific location of the ATM machine it will be a big help.
But yes there probably isn't a whole lot they can/will do other than to escalate an investigation between themselves and WF to confirm there was no actual payout.
Yeah :/ I took a picture of the ATM and it has the time on top!
I'll go into that branch money to see if they can do anything... they have cameras in sure they can see it turning off and not dispense anything
Strange indeed. Sure you won't have trouble getting money credited back to you as ATM know if they spit out money or not as they have to reconcile the cash in ATM to deposit/withdrawal and if cash doesn't add up that is an obvious issue something else has happened.
WF ATM's are weird. Looong time ago while passing through some tiny town at night I pulled $100 when they were only supposed to dispense $20's.
Evidently a $100 bill got slipped into the money cartridge because I ended up with $180.
Contact the WF branch that the machine was part of. They'll be able to go back into the machine history electronically and see the machine reboot time and there should be a journal entry for your transaction right before it happened. It may take a few days, but they should pay you out for the transaction if it did complete on your FI's end. Your cash is probably sitting within the machine just outside of the internal bill counter from the sound of it.
Such a rare thing. I have used ATMs for 31 years but never received an incorrect amount. Was wondering if I was just lucky. I did one time have a similar experience as you, where I made a withdrawal and nothing came out. Though it was only $60 or so and it was 1992-ish. I went to my branch and they were able to help me. Took a few days but got the money credited back.
I imagine you will have similar luck. You have a recipt, a photo, and they almost certainly have video of the transaction. I'd start with the branch you made the ATM withdrawal at and also include someone from your bank to assist.
I got shorted at an ATM once - my bank was not very receptive to my complaint when I contacted them and I received a rather terse "you know, we verify the balance every business day." Well lo and behold, their balance was off and I received the funds credited to my account.
Basically yup, stuff happens. Contact them today and let us know how it turns out.
I am an expat living in Africa. I have had this happen a couple times when using my Schwab debit card to withdraw cash at a local ATM. I hear the "money is being counted" sound, but no cash is dispensed. I have not had to contact anyone; not Schwab or the local bank (ATM owner). The money is automatically refunded to my account, usually within a few hours.
Transaction was "pending" till yesterday and it just dropped off.. and erased from my transaction list.. I'm assuming WF knew their mistake right away when the ATM shut down
