Officially they could not, but with a phone call they might have been willing to bend the rules for a great-grandparent.

They do tend to go by the honor system with regard to membership eligibility but they sometimes do follow up and later ask to provide proof of eligibility and freeze accounts until proof is given or ineligibility established.   With a copy of a DD-214 you're all set.

Well, I don't think it's officially a DD-214 form.  Not sure when those started, but he was honorably discharged in 1946.   It has his rank, service years, commanding officer, unit, awards, etc.  They are official discharge papers, though, just not DD-214, at least I don't think so.

Correct, the form DD-214 wasn't implemented until some time in the 1950s.

When researching my FIL's proof of military service, we reached out to the National Personnel Records Center at the National Archives.  They responded by saying that the DD214 was not used until January 1, 1950.  In lieu of that document, they sent electronic scanned copies of the records they had on hand which included documentation about his honorable discharge from Naval Personnel.

Re: Joined NFCU

I finally went to claim my $426.44 in rewards.  NFCU infuriatingly makes you claim in increments of $50s for cash redemption (deposit in your NFCU savings account).  Claimed $400.  Then I took a $25 gift card.  I left $1.44 on the table.

I think if you take statement credit, you can request at least $50 + any amount of rewards above $50.  But the card is sock drawered (with a $0 balance) and I didn't feel like making a $50 purchase(s) with the card.

$50 minimum and $50 increments is lame.

So, I pulled the trigger and joined NFCU.  The process was a bit more involved than I've ever experienced with other banks, but it wasn't too bad.  My grandfather served in the Army during WW2 and I have his discharge papers to prove eligibility.  Funny thing is they never asked for those.  I just selected Army and Grandfather, took a pic of my driver's license, and transfered 5 bucks from Huntington.  I chose the Free EveryDay Checking as well so I will get a debit card.

In all honesty, I don't plan to use this much.  My kids are getting old enough that they are looking around at their banking options and I wanted to give NFCU as an option if they wanted.  I don't believe they could join directly via my granfldfather, but they can now that I am a member.

Similar experience here. Well, starting with USAA back when it was better...my father was AF and pretty much disowned me and while he put my siblings in for USAA accounts, not me. Anyhow, after I was in the Army that didn't matter - USAA of course had to have documentation, and my "about" even includes service dates and last rank. Got my kids in there, but at this point USAA isn't particularly amazing anymore.

For NFCU, I was ready to present DD-214, but they didn't ask for any documentation. Was super easy and made accounts for kids.

Service Credit Union seems to have other ways in now other than military, so didn't make them accounts for that one, though.

You might check out the Special EasyStart Certificate, good rate, you can start with $50, add up to $3000 when you want. Gives you another account with them, they're big on relationships. The flagship card has a $49 af, but includes a prime membership. Had a nice sub when I got it too.

So, I have a few questions about this CD.  In the fine print it says to get the best rate you need a checking account with direct deposit.  I opened the EveryDay Checking account, but I don't want to do a traditional direct deposit because of a difficult HR situation at my work. But in the terms, it says the direct deposit requirement can also be met by "monthly Non-payroll ACH or payroll allotment totaling at least $500 and recurring for at least three out of four consecutive months that are deposited into Navy Federal deposit accounts where you are Primary Owner."

So, if I just move $500 via ACH from Fidelity into my checking account each month, I can keep the highest rate? If this is true, can I ACH the deposit back out of my NFCU checking account to Fidelity the next day and still meet the requirement? My thinking is that I want to get the high rate, but I don't want to park money in a low interest checking account.

Thoughts?

Not that NFCU's savings accounts are all that good when it comes to interest rates (they stink compared to PenFed and CapOne), my Direct Deposit goes into my savings account, my required checking account has $50 in it and I just let it sit there collecting dust.

Not sure that answers my question. I don't want to DD or keep any money at NFCU other than the CD.

I have one of the Special EasyStart Certificates, and the only direct deposit that I maintain is simply automating a monthly $500 push from my Chase checking account to my NFCU Flagship checking.  However, I don't ACH the funds back out.  I use it to pay my NFCU credit card balance and to deposit a little extra to the certificate.
