I joined about 5 weeks ago, using my boyfriend's access number (we live together, so I seemed to meet eligiblity requirements that way). They didn't ask for any verification, but I am terrified to actually use the accounts because of all these stories about account freezes. The nearest branch to me is about 200 miles away. I suppose I could make the trip if I actually had to, but I don't want to switch direct deposit and all of that stuff over to NFCU, knowing that they may freeze my funds at any time. I think Navy is really selling themselves short on members because of this issue.
I know what you mean. I made my aunt and uncle join so I could because they live with us. Im seriously just regretting the decision because of issues like this. I dont want to go all in and then a year or two down the road this happens and I have to travel 200 miles to the branch to get this figured out. I think I might just use USAA and close my checking account with navy and just keep the savings account and the cc.

If you have access to both and you're not active military, I personally believe USAA has the better checking offering anyway. The only thing NFCU might have over USAA is a local brick-and-mortar location, depending on where you live. If this isn't the case, though, USAA seems to win for checking, hands-down. The tie-breakers for me is getting my direct deposit a day early, and ATM fee rebates.
That being said, like you, I'm very (very!) happy to have my NFCU membership and credit card. My card with them is both my highest credit limit, and lowest APR.
