Do people not already know about existing expenses like food auto insurance and housing payments? 

I assumed that people realize that their new payment has to fit within their current budget, hence the disposable income after all bills misc costs are paid.

You said to first figure out what you want.

I'm saying to first figure out what you can afford and that if it will take you more than 5, preferably no more than 4, years to pay it off you can't afford it.
