In response to another thread - I stole the quote from that thread that is pertinent to this thread, hope that is okay.
@CH-7-Mission-Accomplished wrote:Also, OP, it is not enough if your uncle or grandpa or whomever was a vet. They have to either be active duty or they have to be retired career military and there are also memberships based on being a military contractor under these same categories. This is NOT like USAA where any vet can join and then their family members can join.
Navy Fed defines "household members" as those essentially acting in a situation where incomes and expenses are shared. They do mean it to be more than a couple of college roommates, and they certainly do include domestic partners in this area, but they would include others who live as a family. It gets murky here. It does not state that you must be in a romantic sexual relationship.
But domestic partner is perfectly cool. I would refer to him/her as domestic partner when dealing with Navy and omit the word "roommate." And remember those other relatives won't get you in unless they are active duty now or retired lifers.
Oh noes x 4! Sorry to hijack but not sure a new thread is worth - Please, can someone help? (edit: obviously this is a new post afterall)
So I have military all up and down my family tree - multiple uncles, father, great grandfather who was KIA - nobody is currently active nor has anyone met their 20+ years to retire. I have one uncle who is a current NFCU member and he has the most years under his belt but still, did not retire through USMC. He is willing to sponsor me and I thought if they were alive, this was no problem. But now you're telling me if he's an uncle, he CANNOT sponsor me without being retired?!?!?!?!?!? This kills my dreams.
Please anyone w/a different experience give me a silver lining!

The solution is to become a housemate... haha... (my laugh is really a cry)
Oh, I'm sorry, if you have an "eligible" family member who is in with Navy, you are good to go! I am not sure if uncle/aunt works (check Navy's site), so sometimes people will have the uncle/aunt get their sibling in (your parent) and then you get in that way. I don't remember the eligible family connections. Uncle/aunt may be okay.
Having somebody actually in with navy is great. The hard part is trying to get in with a deceased grandparent who was fully eligible but did not belong. It's hard to chase down all the necessary paperwork.
Don't fret. You are likely good to go.
My grandpa was a Korean War vet... He is now deceased. My mom wanted to try to get in that way, but hasn't yet been successful... ![]()

FAMILY MEMBERSincluding grandparents, parents, spouses, siblings, grandchildren, children (including adopted and stepchildren), and household members; Once your family members have joined, their family members are also eligible for membership.Oh dear me. I know I've read this before, I guess my eyes saw what they wanted and assumed uncle/aunt on the list. But apparently, uncle/aunt not on the list... My parents are very strict with their banking/credit and I seriously doubt they would be willing to open up another account simply so I could take advantage of the wonderful NFCU.Has anyone ever heard of NFCU taking into consideration "extenuating circumstances?" aka based on their site language, is there any chance whatsoever for me to get in through uncle? Oh noes x 5.@Anonymous @ SkinMatters - wishing you the best luck! Please do keep the thread updated; very interested in how it works out for you!
I'm sure it would work if you're willing to marry your uncle. (LOL)
Seriously, it is way easier to get credit from Navy than to get in. As a matter of fact, if you state all the right things with Navy, you will get in, but they are ruthless in following up and checking to make sure you are truly eligible. I mean we are talking DNA testing here.
If you say you want to get in through your uncle, it is not going to work. Sorry.
Take out an ad on Match.com and dump your SO. (I think a Navy relathionship is probably more valuable than a good spouse. You can always divorce and find the one you want later - LOL).

Your parents wont have to change banks or anything like that. Just pay the five dollars each to open a savings account and they are in (you should pay it for them). Then you have your way in.

Lol, I'll pass on the marrying of my uncle.
The thing about it is, my SO has a dad retired USAF so he could get in through his dad - but his dad also "weird" about credit! argh! People!
But I will take your words under strong advisement and put my boyf on notice - he's out!
@ Pizza - thanks for your input. I totally get it. I really appreciate you taking the time to chime in.
@ Jbsea: My birthday is pretty soon and my mom is fairly kind (she's a saint, actually) and it's her bro that's in with NFCU... so I'm betting (scratch that, HOPING AND PRAYING) that she will grant me this one wish. I will present it just as you said - a simple savings account that only needs $5 that I will pay ABSOLUTELY. It will be the convincing her it's not going to show up on her credit report or otherwise affect her credit situation that is practically impossible. (I said they were strict with banking/credit, not smart - although their credit scores are the closest to 850 I've ever seen)
THANKS GUYS!!!!
Fingers crossed for me guys and gals.
