This collection company was charging an insane amount of interest on a closed credit card account. The amount of interest they were charging was insane. The original debt was $900 and the current collection amount that sat on my credit report was over $2700 dollars! 
I would never be able to pay that off with the amount of interest that was accruing. I found out the original creditor was sued by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau with a class action lawsuit do to "unfair business and abuse practices". I filed a complaint with CFPB stating that I would like the collection agency to cease all collection attempts and remove the debt from my credit report. I got a response from the collection agency legal department stating the debt will be removed from all reports with no monetary money owed and will not they will not sell the account to another agency.
