Can Creditor update from closed account current to collection/chargeoff?

Ok so im worried. Backstory: I had an American Airlines CC, well in 2010 i went through some tough times, and asked them what i could do during a hardship, temp job etc.. the csr said ok we can give you 12 months 0% just pay the minimums due, i said ok great awesome ty. Set up autopay. So i go to login one day maybe a month later and said acct closed.. I was like huh? I called and another rep said ohhh in changing to that hardship you changed terms of agreement so aa closed your account. I said well i did not want that. She stated nothing we can do now, whats done is done. I had been on autopay, so after about 14 months i get a alert on a credit monitoring site saying i was late on a payment! I looked it was from aa/cbna im like what?? I call and say hey you guys arent taking the payments i autopay, csr says ohhh they are only set up for 12 months at a time.. you have to reset it im like omg.. so i got a 60 day late.. hiccup that was mar of 2012, so i continue paying my monthly payments, never an arrangement or anything, never sent to collections, nothing. Its been reporting on my credit as closed for nearly 15 mths or so.. then last month i decided to go ahead and pay the final bill what was left of it. It had been reporting current, just showed a blance. So it updated to PAID but now shows up as a collection/chargeoff as of 05/2013.. I call American Airlines and one rep said i will not be removed.. Im like what?? I called Equifax filed a dispute. I even talked to collections dept and they said nope never charged off never collections. Bothers me that a front line csr says no that will stay on your report, in a very evil crude way! Then on my report it states sent to collections;sent to a laawyer; internal collections; account seriously past due/derogatory. So what in the world is this? Screw me day haha. Seems highly illegal to report that as of now.. maybe if it had gone the 180 days to a collection agency i understand but what!! Any thoughts or advise, as this shows a new collection from now.. so close to having a clean slate and then this. Feels like 10 steps forward and a huge knockdown.

sorry for my rambling. So

1. Can they legally change a status of current paying, to Paid and collection/chargeoff.. in a matter of a month.

2. Besides disputing what would you do?

3. It has not hit my other 2 only EX now, so i took a snapshot of my report, i dont know how to post images. or i would show you.

If billing told you they never charged off or sent the account to collections, it is being reported incorrectly.  I would send them a direct dispute under FCRA 623(a)(8).

The only one showing CO is EX so it may be something the CRA did incorrectly.

Re: Can Creditor update from closed account current to collection/chargeoff?

yeh but before it reported the zero balance which i paid it updated to the paid zero bal. then the co see the other 2 have not updated yet to show that i paid it off.. so now im wondering if they both will be same Charge off...looks crazy to me.. i mean no way possible to go from ok to co with it being paid in full.. lol. this is hurting scores dropped 10 points as soon as it hit

Re: Can Creditor update from closed account current to collection/chargeoff?

I didn't even see the balance, I was looking at the history.  But yes that is a possibility.

The balances are different also.

I would send the OC a direct dispute and get it staightened out.

Re: Can Creditor update from closed account current to collection/chargeoff?

yep.. my biggest fear has come true, for some reason TU and EQ updated today and all say chargeoff.. EQ says late 120 days im like **bleep**.. i paid every month! worst ever late was 60 days back in 2012.. paid monthly then paid it off.. so they all update to a collection/chargeoff.. im confused.. killed all my scores with a new baddie. ive disputed with EX and TU now i gotta get EQ this is BS.. how can they do this to people??

Re: Can Creditor update from closed account current to collection/chargeoff?

When you were 60 days late in 2012, did you ever bring the account current or just kept making some sort of payment?  If you didn't bring the account current then you would have been considered late.

If that isn't what happened you need to contact them and find out.
