Citibank Charge-off Sold to Unknown Collection Agency

What's the best way to figure out who the collection agency is, if not reporting?  Citbank says they don't know.

They have to know. They sold it. I'd call again and move up the chain if you have to.

When did this happen?  Are you aware of this data point?

If possible, go to annualcreditreport.com and take a look for an "unknown" account.  That could be it.

And, again, CitiBank does indeed need to know.  Also, keep in mind the following (I include this just to be complete and thourough):

When you have a string a late payments - typically there are six consequtive missed payments before a Financial Instituion will score an account as a "Charge Off" - a Financial Institution can deem an account (read: your credit card) as a loss.  They can do one of three things:

1. Do nothing (dont hold your breath for that)

2. Sell the debt to a collection agency (whereby said CA becomes the legal owner of the debt)

3. Hire a CA to attempt to collect the debt on their behalf (whereby the Financial Instituion remains the legal owner of the debt - they are simply at the point where they have exhausted all of their resources in an attempt to collect the debt so they hire someone else to take over in the attempt to collect)

A Charge Off is simply an accounting term for the Financial Institution.  You still owe the debt.

If this happened recently then there can be a period of time in which no one really knows the whos, wheres, whats, and whys of this account and you might be on a wild goose chase or two.

So, if you look at your credit reports and you do not see any "unknown" accounts (these will typically be designated as "derogatory" on the credit reports....) and CitiBank says "we do not know" then I would suggest that you give it a week or three and then try again.  Sometimes time is what is needed.

If Citi refuses to give you the name of the agency they sold it too you will most likely have to wait till they contact you. One thing you can do is take a look at SPs and see if any are collectors and if so you can call them to ask.
