Debt validation with utility company

The gas company is reporting me 120 days late on payments to them. They sent it to collection and that is on my report, too. I have never done business with this company. Do I dispute this with the gas company, the collection agency, or both? What kind of documentation should I ask for?

You can only do a DV with a CA, so I'd start there. I would use one of the many form letters in here.
