Hello Everyone!
I have done a great job rebuilding my credit for the past year and a half with the help of this lovely forum! Now, I am moving towards clearing up the two measly collections I have on my account.
I pulled my annual credit report yesterday to get the most detailed view of my collections, and I noticed a discrepancy. I have a collection for People's Natural Gas with the collection agency Southwest Credit Systems, and they are reporting an inaccurate DOFD. My reports are showing that my DOFD is from sometime in 2015...but I haven't had any sort of utility bill since 2013. I also have a copy of my last bill, showing it was generated 6/12/13. This is upsetting because the agency is adding an extra 2 years to my drop off date. I'm kind of banking on having this fall off since Southwest Credit just won't agree to PFDs. Should I dispute? Would this be enough information for initiating a dispute, or is there something else I should try to obtain?
Also, has anyone had luck or experience with negotiating pfd directly with People's. I'd like to go that route if it's been proven to be lucrative.
Thanks!
What you can now prove as the accurate DOFD would clearly be basis for filing a dispute with the goal of updating to the correct value.
However, it wont require any deletion of the collection, so dont expect the dispute will rid you of the collection.
What it will do is ensure it becomes excluded on its proper date of approx. 7 years from the updated DOFD.
Stated differently, the dispute process has the goal of correcting inaccuracies, not requring deletion of other information that is not identified as being inaccurate, which includes the entire account/collection.
A furnisher always has the opportunity to correct prior reporting in response to any dispute without any requirement of deletion, and DOFD is a required item of information. REsolution of a dispute applies only to the item of information that is subject of the dispute, and deletion is only mandated if the information cannot be verified or corrected. In the case of a DOFD, your evidence, if pursuasive of inaccuracy of the currently reported value, would also be basis for update by the CRA to your proven value.
