Fake debt collector?

Got a call today from a debt collector.

They told me that I owe 1100 for a payday loan in 2011 from a company called Gold cash. I asked the guy the name of the collection company and after I requested him to spell it for me because he kept mumbling the company name he stated that I refused to pay the debt and hung up on me.

Called back, same guy answered said he was getting a manager. I requested verification on paper stating everything about this alleged debt. They said they would email me....ok whatever fine. I never got an email so I called back and requested their mailing address. I was told that they have locations nation wide and locally and that they were getting a manager. Manager told me that I used language with a representative and that I have called multiple times and that they didn't feel safe talking to me anymore and they requested that I please stop calling them.

So refusal of address
No bill in the mail
Pay day Loan company doesn't exist
As far as I know the collection company doesn't exist they're called Unison Inc.
they did have my birthday, name and last four of my social so is my info floating around to people?
They even spouted off a bank account number and said that I had made a payment in April of 2012?
I want to escalate this if it is fake, what should I do?
The only person that got angry was their representatives I never got loud or used language....

Re: Fake debt collector?

Sounds like a total scam. I would bring this to the attention of either the CFBP or BBB.

Re: Fake debt collector?

I applied for prequal for a mortgage so I'm wondering if scammers are coming out of the woodworks.

Always possible. The CFPB and states AG is the way to go with these scammers.  http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/

I never took out a payday loan though. Is there a number I can call to explain what happened?

The number is on the CFPB home page. Not sure if it's allowed to be posted here or not but it easily accessible following the link provided

Re: Fake debt collector?

Sounds like scammers to me.  I had a bad experience a few years ago with some "debt collector" calling me at work about some BS debt.  First clue they would not speak to me about my debt but needed to talk with my lawyer.  2nd Clue I informed them this was my work number and please do not call this number again, they called me 6-7 times in a row for 3 straight days at work.  My boss was not amused and asked me to do something to stop these calls.  I kept telling them not to call and they would still call.

I finally had the IT department print out a history of received phone calls for those days, edited out the nonBS numbers and forwarded that along with a written complaint to the FTC.

These BSers still did not stop, about every three months they would start calling looking for me.  I finally had to tell them I no longer worked there.  Everyone in the office knew I was having this issue.  So now when I get BS emails saying they are taking me to court or arresting me I just forward them to the FTC guy or if I start getting real bad phone calls I forward the call to the FTC.  They can't help individuals but if they get enough complaints, they will investigate.
