Friendly, Supportive, and Respectful -- 2/6/14

Hello folks,

This is an open letter to the entire community.

Recently we've been seeing a decline in general courtesy on this forum; we've strived to make this forum a Friendly, Supportive, and Respectful online resource for credit education and similar topics, and as of late we have been straying from that ideal.  We do not want to see this continue to slide into the typical online community where mostly anything goes, and as such, we are going to be taking more active stance when it comes to handling occurrences of inappropriate material.

From our User Guidelines:

Inappropriate material

In the spirit of a healthy and helpful community, profanity, spam, personal attacks, flaming, and other inappropriate postings are not tolerated.  Such material may be edited or removed, and egregious or repeat offenders will be banned from future participation in myFICO Forums.

This is a violation in accordance with our Terms of Service, specifically:

  • Attacks, including “Flaming” another user or entity in such a way as to incite or perpetuate an argument or conflict; creating usernames to attack other users’ identities; impersonating other individuals or falsely representing one’s identity or qualifications; posts made under secondary user names or other aliases for the purpose of either endorsing or denigrating others; posts that breach any participant’s privacy by including name, address, phone, email address, or any other identifying information.

We don't want to shutdown the discourse of ideas entirely, and some information even when posted perfectly in accordance with our policies will be viewed as negative to certain members: we will continue to apply our admittedly subjective standard of reasonableness in such situations, but we have had recent incidents which have crossed the line, and these we want to eliminate.

For more information, please refer to our User Guidelines and our Terms of Service.

Thank you, and we greatly appreciate everyone's efforts in keeping this forum as a Friendly, Supportive, and Respectful environment!

Revelate, could you post links to the threads containing this type of behaviour?

Can't for two reasons: first, many have been edited or removed, secondly we're not going to call out individuals in public.

As an example that's come up over time and paraphrased here: "If you hadn't done something stupid earlier you wouldn't have this issue now."

While we're not arguing it's banal truth, it's simply rude, provides no assistance (not going to debate the concept of tough love), and fails the Friendly, Supportive, Respectful ideal.  I know it's a gray area as a subjective measure: I'll be the first to admit both as a member and a current volunteer moderator that some of my own posts have failed to meet this expectation (I have the advantage of being able to remove mine, think I hold the record for most posts by a moderator in the trash can) but the line needs to be redrawn and as such we're making the public notice that this behavior isn't acceptable.

While I'm a supporter of the community here and I appreciate how it was created, it's not for everyone.  There are other online communities that serve mostly an identical function to this forum, and they draw the line at a different standard of acceptability.  I have somewhat tongue-in-cheek labelled myself as CareBear on some of the minor tweaks I've done to threads over time, but end of the day we're going to hold up the standards that this forum has set.

I agree!
Answers along the like "if you hadn't done something stupid earlier you wouldn't have this problem now" offers no assistance while belittling the person needing help. That sort of replies do not belong to this forum. A better response would be "you can try doing such and such to fix your situation. As for future suggestion why don't you consider avoiding these other things that might have put you in this situation". This offers present help and future guidance.
On a lighter note to quote captain piccard "the line must be drawn here. No further!" Smiley Happy

Revelate, I am new to the forum and wanted to say "Thank You" for your post. We come here from all walks of life and that means that standards are subjective.

How people treat each other in their own homes is different everywhere, and as a result those behaviour's are brought forth into our daily interactions with each other. .

Some know what is okay - while others are learning what is okay - and others yet have learned not to care what is okay, and all points in between.

Thank You again for holding the line of Friendship, Support, and Respect in this forum.
