Is NFCU worth it for rebuilding?

Long story short. My scores sit at 523, 498, and 512. I do have medical collections, lots of inquiries, and a repo from 2015 when I lost my job. I have cleaned my reports up a good bit believe it or not but it is still bad. The only line of credit I have is my Fingerhut credit card which is in good standing. I always see people mention NFCU and how it has benefited them greatly but I am still confused as to how they operate? I have no armed forces affiliation and my credit profile probably will not allow me to qualify for anything with them. Any reviews or info you could give me would be much appreciated!

They pull TU for entry into the CU itself. I'm not sure your scores are there for them to let you in just yet. Now, once you can get in, I think it's a fantastic move. I literally just join through Navy League. Waiting for a baddie to disappear before I start looking at the products. But I've done a ton of research and the overall mood is that they say yes when most other credit answers are no. Do you have no CC's as of right now?

Started on July 4th, 2016 with 400's FAKO scores, no FICO, a dozen baddies and no credit of any kind.

As of March 2018, Before The Fall:
AmEx Blue Cash Everyday: $12,600
Chase Sapphire Preferred: $10,000
Bank Of America BankAmericard: $6,000
Capital One Quicksilver One: $5,500
Citi Diamond Preferred: $5,400
NFCU Cash Rewards Visa Signature: $5,100
NFCU Go Rewards MasterCard World: $5,000
Wells Fargo Propel: $3,500
Barclay's Uber Visa: $2,500
AmEx Starwood Preferred Guest: $2,000
Citi Double Cash: $1,500
AmEx Hilton Honors: $1,000
Discover It: $600
Capital One Platinum: $500

TOTAL 2018 CREDIT LINE: $61,200

JUNE 2023 UPDATE
2020: COVID toppled me. All old accounts went into default. Business lost. Car repossessed.
2021: Cap1 let me back in (one secured/two not). Secured Mission Lane. AU on AMEX Gold, Citi Premier and Chase Sapphire. Car loan approved without cosigner for $20,000. All current.
Currently: No lawsuits. Thinking most SOL have expired on CC debt. Fingers crossed my math and memory are correct.

CURRENT SITUATION:
Mission Lane Secured: $3,400 (SL $400 -- unasked for CLI)
Capital One Secured: $300
Capital One QS1: $300
Capital One Savor: $1,000
Chase Sapphire Preferred: $10,000 (AU)
AMEX Gold: No Preset Limit (AU)
Citi Premier: $8,500 (AU)

I joined Navy League via membership to the NLUS San Diego chapter.  It must be the San Diego chapter.  As for their products, I do not have any yet, but hope for that to change soon.  I don't have any information regarding them other than I received a couple of sign up bonuses for referring my BF and my sister for membership.  Have you looked at getting a couple of secured cards?  That is a great way to get the rebuilding process going.

Re: Is NFCU worth it for rebuilding?

I was wondering the same about NFCU. I have been reading about them on here and there is SO much information on them. I downloaded the application and looked it over a few times. Where do we put NLSD on the app. I knowunder membership eligibilty, there is a checkmark for Association/Community/Organization I can select. I planned on either faxing the application or scanning it with my Drivers license, a utility bill, and paystubs.

My understanding is that the membership pull is solely for identity verification not for scores.

Re: Is NFCU worth it for rebuilding?

I absolutely suggest joining Navy Federal. Especially rebuilders. They will give you a chance when most others won't. They are the largest CU in the country and very generous to rebuilders. OP, you may need to go the secured card route first. Then once you reach 590+ you can go unsecured. I was approved for $3k with a 590ish score over 3 yrs ago. And now have almost $60k in credit with them! Love love love Navy Fed. 😆

Those with no military eligibility can follow instructions in thread below for membership:

Do you mean that their secured card graduates to unsecured?  I have been looking at getting another secured card (I have the Discover IT one) and am trying to research which one to get.  I've heard great things about the NFCU one.  I'm a bit nervous, though.  My scores have improved, but I do have some chargeoffs.
