Newbie: What is the next step

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to rebuild my credit after going through a BK in 2015 and a divorce 2022. I only have 1 secured discover card in good standing that I just opened Dec 2021 and a 9k car loan that will be paid off when the divorce is final. I have 5 collection accounts 4 are medical (all under $300 each) and in dispute one is a 3k installment loan that went south 2 years ago. I had 3 Capital One credit cards that were in collections and i settled them Nov. 2021 so I do not want to go back with Capital One.

My question is what is the next step in building my credit? I am thinking about applying for another secured card but I heard that secured cards through banks are better for your credit than ones with online companies. I know Bank of America has a securd card but i hear they deny anyone with a BK.  Do I need installment debt? I have never had a credit score higher than 620 and I would like to be able to qualify for a home loan in about a year so anything over 640 is my goal.

My fico shows my scores much higher than credit carma. my experian score is 590, equifax 597 and transunion 637 but credit karma has my transunion at 536 and equfax at 540 and no experian score.

Most people on this board seemed to have started where I am working to get to so I am trying not to get discouraged. I started with scores of around 514 one was in the 400's

9/2021 Starting Score: 529 EX; 567 TU; 523 EQ
9/2022 Current Score: 639 EX; 644 TU; 622 EQ
Goal Score: 700

Current Cards: Discover Secured $1k Graduated Unsecured $2.5k; Amex Delta Gold $1k; Target Red Card $300; Home Depot $500; Mission Lane $500; Bank of America Secured $1k; Kohls $600; Unity One CU $500; US Bank $500

BK 7/2015

Denials: Sephora/Ulta; PenFed; Alliant CU; Navy Federal CU; Best Buy; Apple Card; Petal 1

Re: Newbie: What is the next step

Ok then. List out the baddies like this:

Creditor/Credit Line/Balance

Collection Agency Name/ Amount owed

Then when we have something to work with. We'll set out a plan.

Welcome to the forums

Re: Newbie: What is the next step

First, as @FireMedic1 said, list out everything in an easy to read way.

Secondly, take care of those 4 medical collections using the below steps:

@gdale6 wrote:

1. Call the OC and see if insurance can be billed, (or-rebilled), collections ultimately paid by insurance get removed per new rules that came from CRAs settlement with 22 state AGs. If not then
2. see if you qualify for Charity Care, if not then
3. ask that they recall the collection in exchange for full payment
4. Send the reporting CA a PFD offer
5. Google the HIPAA Process and contact its creator for help, this process cannot be discussed in any forum of myFico.

Though you may have to wait until the dispute is resolved. What was the dispute for?

I'm not sure where you heard that cards with banks are "better than online ones," but that's completely false. Apply wherever you'd like as long as it's not a predatory card like First Premier or Credit One.

You don't *need* installment debt, but if you happen to have any sort of installment loan, whether it's auto, mortgage, personal, student, etc., you're good. It provides a small boost to your credit mix. But on a dirty file such as yours, the credit mix portion is basically negligible.

Do pay attention to your MyFICO scores, ignore the Credit Karma scores. They're Vantage 3.0 scores, which are basically not used by any major lenders. The FICO scores you listed I'm assuming are FICO 8s, which are usually the golden standard, but for mortgages, those aren't the ones used. You need to look at the respective mortgage scores on each bureau: EX2, EQ5, TU4.

Re: Newbie: What is the next step

Thank you for the information I put in a dispute for the collections hopefully they can be removed.

I keep getting credit offers for First Premier and Fingerhut, I didnt want to do those. I am not sure which other secured cards I would get approved for. I do have a local Credit Union but I am not sure of thier credit requirements I will have to go into a branch and see.

Should I take care of the collections first or go ahead and apply for other secured cards?

I will stop paying attention to Credit Karma Smiley Happy

Re: Newbie: What is the next step

Pay all attention to fixing whats broken first. No need to increase credit limit for now. More credit doesnt raise a score unless your carrying a balance. Or any more cards until all is fixed. Work out a plan to pay all the debts either settled or PIF. Once that happens and reports. Then check scores. Come back here and we'll guide you in the right direction. Ignore the vulture cards for now.

If its National Credit Systems. Ad Astra and NCS will PFD if settled or PIF  from previous success stories. Before that. Contact Texas Health and see if they will take payment in exchange for recalling their collections.

I understand you put I'm a dispute for the collections, but what I'm asking is what is the basis of your dispute. In other words, *what* about the collection are you disputing? Disputes are to correct inaccurate information, not to try to get collections removed just because you don't want them on your reports.

As @FireMedic1 said, first take care of your negative information, let it update, and THEN worry about new credit.

Thank you! Iol

Ok so here is an update. Im stuck, my credit score is not moving and I am not sure what else to do. I have not pulled recent fico scores I can only see Experian which is 623 The last time I checked equifax and transunion those scores were in the 590s.  My Credit Karma shows Equifax 657 and Transunion 664 however I know those arent the true scores

The strike throughs have been paid off.

The two for Texas health have been in dispute since March. I called Credit Systems and Texas Health they were supposed to resubmit

the claims to my insurance (which they will not pay because they are too old) and then write them off but they keep saying that its

still in process.
