Old collection with Verizon Wireless

Hey Fico Fam,

Happy Saturday to all.  I grabbed my mail last night and opened what I thought looked like the tri fold envelopes I USED to get from collections.  I folded and then zipped off the three sides and sure enough, it was from Jefferson Capital for an old Verizon Wireless bill for $384.85,  Problem is I have already paid this old collection and have the proof of it.  On two of the CB's the collection is there as Verizon South with the familiar "paid or settled collection legally for less, blah blah blah....point is it was paid off March 2021.  On the 3rd CB it shows as Verizon South but has the same details and just the actual name is slightly different.  At the bottom of this it also states due to the age of this debt Jefferson is not able to sue you nor can we report it to other credit agenices.  Then it also states "in many cases you can renew the debt and restart the time period for filing of a lawsuit filed against you if you take certain selections like making certain payment on this debt or making a written promise to pay this debt"

Obviously I know I am ok due to age of this but the bigger picture is that I have already paid for this and it should not be reflecting as an ongoing collection, regardless of any other factors.  Account was first 30 days late May 2018 for $862.  I paid the offer on March 2021 to make this collection be paid; settled for less for $476 and the difference in me settling for less is what is showing now as the collection as active.   What are my actions to take or do I just ignore knowing it is just a DC trying to scare me into paying on something I legally don't need to pay on?  Interestingly I recieved something similar for another old collection a few months ago with the same idea.  A paid for less settled collecion and a JDC trying to make a quick penny.  Thanks as always guys!

Re: Old collection with Verizon Wireless

I'd call them up and tell them its on their website that any collection settled or paid will be deleted from your report. Why is it on my reports?

"Our policy is that we will request the credit bureaus delete our tradeline approximately 30 days after the final payment has been posted that resolves the account as paid in full or paid in full for less than the full balance."

Thanks FM.  I guess now I have more questions than answers after reading your reply.  I truly have no idea why Jefferson is even involved in this old CO as I paid Verizon Wireless through their internal collections (I believe) in March 2021 for $407, paid; settled for less and on all three reports the Verizon CO is present.  On TU & EX it shows the same with Verizon Wireless and the debt of $407 padi March 2021 settled for less and on Eq it is slightly different with Verizon Wireless/Southeast with the same amount paid for less.  On the letters from Jefferson Capital it states they are collecting for Verizon Wireless but the amount isn't even the correct amount but regardless, how are they collecting on an old debt that I paid and settled for less with Verizon??? I guess that is where my confusion is.  I don't mean to beat a drum over and over but if one took care of this CO and it stopped reporting with a zero balance March 2021, how is Jefferson sending me CO for a different amount on behalf of Verizon Wireless?  I don't have any other Verizon collections and the one above was truly mine after I stupidly opened and bought an Apple cell phone and service for an old boyfriend back in April 2018 for which he never made one single payment.  So yea dumb move on my part but that CO was still mine and correct to report.  But I then took care of this is 2021.  How and why does a DB then start sending me letters to settle 2 years after I paid and settled with the original debt?  To be clear, Jefferson Capital is not and hasn't shown up anywhere on my credit report at all.  Any ideas?  TY as always FM and co!!  This is how Verizon is showing on Eq, oddly enough it reads Verizon Wireless/Southeast while the other two show as Verizon Wireless.

Re: Old collection with Verizon Wireless

Take all the paperwork, reciepts, ect. Go to a real Verizon store and show them what you got. Not a franchise store. Speak to the manager and they can call HQ and get it fixed. Epecially if your still a customer. Verizon has their own internal CA. If it isnt paid in a certain timeframe. They sell it out. Might hit it lucky the store mgr may have it removed.
