Power bill on my credit.

I have a powerbill that just showed up on my credit report from 2006. It says it was wrote off by creditor for $26. I paid the bill before shutting the power off. I had just finished college and didnt keep the reciept. The thing is killing my score. Can I dispute this without any proof.

How did you pay? Can't you reference your bank statements? Are you sure there wasn't a prorated final bill you weren't aware of?

I'd DV the CA and see what comes back.

Have you called the OC to ask what gives? Maybe they made a mistake and would be willing to pull it back from the CA...

DV the CA means to send the Collection Agency (CA) a debt validation (DV) letter to force them to validate that the debt is, indeed, yours.

Call them, offer to pay if it is owed. Demand that they remove it. Yes it is hurting.

Call the Power Company or the People who were reported to collect the money?

Call the power company and ask them about this debt.

Explain that you paid and thought no balance was owed.

If it turns out you do owe $26, ask them if they'd pull the account back from the CA and allow you to PIF and instruct the CA to delete from your report.
