Rather to be added as a authorized user to parents account

I have a Mazda Tribute with a 17,000 balance on it. The car is in my parents name however, I make all the car payments. The loan is 4 years old. I have never been late on the car payments. However, I cannot say the same about my credit cards. Is it a good idea to be added to the car loan to improve the length of time I had credit. Or will the high balance ruin my credit score?
