Okay all, I am going crazy. I am helping a friend clear up some baddies. He has 1 student loan. It has been paid in full. It was from 2009 and finally paid it off last year. Here is the fun part.. it is showing up a total of 11 times between the three bureaus. 4 on EX, 3 on EQ (which one is still showing a balance owed), and 4 times on TU. Most of them have different creditor names, almost none of the addresses or account numbers match up. We have tried calling the the Dept of Ed who transferred us to the collection agency he paid (and the one that is reporting a balance on EQ still). They say they are reporting correctly and basically we must be stupid, and they are almighty because they are contractors of the government, and if their computer shows its reporting correctly, then it must be. Rep actually told us she didn't have time to argue that its not reporting right and to quit bothering thier time. My question is: if a debt is transferred or moved, can the old debt still be reported or should it come off? And secondly, how do we go about getting the balance corrected? We have disputed with EQ online, just to get a letter saying it was correct. Then I had him mail in a physical dispute with the PIF letter. The responce to that was "unable to process due to not being able to verify identity". He resubmitted the dispute with a copy of his drivers licence, social security card, voter ID card, and an affidavit of identity. All of those docs he had notorized as true copies. Got a letter in the mail today from EQ stating it was valid. What does he need to do next?
Thanks!

Was the federal student loan rehabbed, which thereafter resulted in transfer to a new creditor?
Rehabbed federal student loans can show multiple creditors/servicers, but only one should show a current balance.
