I am just re-starting my credit re-building journey. I currently have four credit cards (USAA secured, CapitalOne Quicksilver, 2 CreditOne), all are paid down under 10% utilization, no lates in last two years. I just closed the fitfh one that I had which was an Indigo card, zero balance, recenr reported late payments, Feb 2022. I have an installment loan (OneMain Financial) with a $16,000 balance, $476.50/mth, last late payement June 2021. I have 5 collections across all 3B reports totaling $6,447. Scores as of today are 601eq, 617tu, 601ex. Goal score is 750. Where should I start? I am thinking pay off collections. I am not looking to have alot of credit cards. I am striving to have one with rewards and a high limit. Also working towards purchasing a home in the next 12-18 months.
Who are the collections with and what are their individual balances?
Also, why do you have lates happen so often? Are you struggling financially, or is something else going on? Not trying to judge, just trying to get a better understanding of your situation.
Indigo lates happened from sending payments and them not being cleared on time and the account being drawn from has other payments come out.
OneMain late came from changing debit card and not updating payment on-time, then not realizing until the next month.
My other credit cards have no lates ever, I only mentioned that last two years because that's what I am focusing on at the moment.
The collection accounts are:
ARGENTAL REVENUE SERVICE - $2,360
CCS COLLECTIONS - $160
MEDICAL DATA SYSTEMS - $216
Amerassist Ar Solution - $1,502
083YC00034 (Don't have the name of the collection agency on the report for some reason) - $2,209

I can't help you with the CAs but I think where you need to start is getting yourself organized and set up a system for tracking and managing your finances.
The lates sound to have been avoidable if you had a better awareness of what you had going on. That takes regular and dedicated attention to your accounts. So, a system that you can stick to is your first priority. You must not allow any more lates.
Next, you are right about tackling the CAs as a priority.
With your current scores and negative accounts your timeline for a mortgage may be optimistic, but you won't get there without starting now.
You can do this.

No offense, but it sounds like those lates for both Indigo and OneMain could have easily been avoided. For Indigo, if you scheduled a payment, you must keep track of your checking account balance and make sure there are enough funds in there to cover said payment. If you already made the payment, whether the money's been taken out of your checking account yet or not, you need to pretend like it's gone. You must keep track of all incoming deposits and outgoing payments.
For OneMain, that just boils down to awareness. Be aware of your card expiration dates, and make sure it's updated on any recurring payment sites well before it actually expires. Banks generally send new debit cards at least a month prior to your old ones expiring.
