Will it cause more trouble to pay off old collections?

I have a few medical/utilities in collections from 2003, I haven't been harrassed by anybody but I went through my report and I thought it would be good to start paying these off, total =$850. Somebody told me that by contacting/paying them they will change the date of last activity to this year and I will need to wait another seven before they drop off. I haven't mailed any checks yet, I just want to help my credit in the most cost effective way possible. Would it be better for me to just let those drop off?

Paying them will not make them remain another 7 years. They will still be removed when they are supposed to.

However, paid vs unpaid collections affect your score in the same way.

So, paying them will not likely increase score.

On the medical collections, I would follow the HIPAA route.....click the medical debt link in my signature.

On the others, I would DV and PFD. Are they past SOL?

Considering that it's so old, they are very likely to PFD the account.
