how can i stop NCO from reporting?

I just realized that NCO bought an old collection account of mine but it's not yet showing up on my credit report. I want to pay it before they report but how do I ensure that they don't report it as "paid"? Can I get them to put something in writing or am I just being paranoid?

It's just that I've read such awful things about NCO!

Contact them and offer to pay if they agree not to post to your CR.  Just be advised they can post it at any time so be nice and sweet.
