HIPPA Letter Process - Step 1 Questions

Warning - newbie.  Be gentle.  Smiley Happy

I have PAID medical collections on my credit report and I understand I can get them removed with this HIPPA process. I read the sticky posts but still have questions about Step 1.

Step 1

Opt-Out Credit Reports.  Why am I doing this?  What does it do?  What is the net effect to me?

Opt-Out All Creditors.  I dont have any creditors.  I have no debt.  Do I still do this?  Same questions as above.

Thanks!!

Re: HIPPA Letter Process - Step 1 Questions

Opting-out with the CRAs helps prevent other CAs and JDBs (junk debt buyers) from accessing your personal information on your credit reports. When med debt in new, its usually assigned to a CA, but old med debt can be sold and resold. The idea behind opting-out with the CRAs is to make it difficult for CAs and JBDs to collect from you on a debt that they have no business purpose to report or collect on. Just because the original CA might have had a business purpose to collect and report, that doesn't mean subsequent CAs and JDBs do.

Since you have no creditors, you may skip the opting-out with creditors step.

Re: HIPPA Letter Process - Step 1 Questions

I just though of something.  Does it matter that nowhere on the CR I got from the CRA does it state this is a medical debt?  I know it is because I paid it at the clinic, but its only listed under the name of the CRA.  Does that matter?

Thanks again.

Re: HIPPA Letter Process - Step 1 Questions

Ok, cancel that last statement.  I was looking at the credit report I got from a 3rd party site, not the one I actually got from the CRA.  The one I got from the CRA does list the name of the medical clinic on the debt.  My bad.

Thanks for the response anyway fused.
