Cable and TV

We have xfinity for cable and internet and I am sick of paying all this money .

i need high speed internet for work we have 1000mbps can I go lower ?

Was thinking of keeping internet few options around here  and then cancelling cable and switching looking at sling ?

Anyone use them ? Or any other sight, technically challenged here lol

Re: Cable and TV

You don't need 1gb or 1000mbps down for work that is certain.  Really you only need that bandwidth if you have a big family and multiple people streaming and doing Internet and downloading etc things at once.  Likely be fine on 100-300 mbps down.  I am at 500mbs down and is overkill and I work in IT.  As far as streaming youtube TV is probably the best for that now depending on what you value although thinking of getting rid of that and just paying Internet.  I am just sick of paying the ever increasing prices.   I am guessing if you dropped your bandwidth down and did steaming you might save 30-50 a month maybe a bit more but it all adds up.  Best of luck I am on Frontier Fiber for Internet btw but was with your cable service provider before as well and got sick and tired of Internet going out fiber is the way to go if you have the option.  If you don't care about sports or news and can just get that off the internet then just go with Internet as well.  Of course Us Bank Cash+ will give you 5% back on Internet then I pay my youtube tv with my bmo for 5% back as well as other cat on cash+ is mobile.  Everything adds up

Re: Cable and TV

I have had a stand alone internet package for about 4 years and use a multitude of different streaming packages.  It's not really cheaper than before, but I have more variety.  It's a bit of a nuisance dealing with all the different user interfaces, but you just need to understand that they all exist as individual apps.

I've had some experience with SlingTV in the past from being "tech support" for my elderly parents.  I got them a Sling subscription because Sling had the exclusive license for a specific set of channels.  I didn't think it was a very good service, but it was priced well.  I definitely wasn't for me.

I would suggest that you figure out which channels and genres are must haves for your household, and figure out where you can access that particular programming.  Some channels are on just about every mainstream service, while other are exclusives.  I use YouTube TV as my main service and add about a half dozen others at any particular time.  Some I get for free or at discounted prices by having some other relationship.  Examples:  free Netflix and Apple TV from T-Mobile; free Paramount+ from having Walmart+ (which is in turn free with my Amex Platinum card).  Other services I add and cancel as needed.  You also need to be on the lookout for special deals like half price annual subscriptions or 3 months free.  I'm currently getting 4 months of Max for free for having NFL Sunday Ticket through YouTube TV.

Re: Cable and TV

Well I called to cancel cable as I downloaded sling for 60 a month . They lowered my bill to 80 for internet as my friend has glofiber down the street and had had multiple outages 😳 for over 12 hours I work from home I can not risk that right now . But I don't get local channels from sling 😡I found channels on Roku channel as I have that TV they seem free and found fox for football today , but a little confused if it's really free . I checked my Roku account and I have no monthly subscriptions and I also have a feature on my TV that says live TV with channels ? This do do confusing lol

NFL Football is a tough one these days.  Coverage is spread out amongst so many services.  CBS, FOX, ESPN, Amazon, Peacock, and even Netflix on Christmas day.  Since Sling doesn't offer much in the way of local broadcast channels, you might want to try using an external digital antenna to see what channels you can receive over the air.

@NoHardLimits

Yes being a huge NFL fan this ticks me off as sling has no local channels in area I have prime so I get those games and the cheap Netflix plan as they seemed to be heading to more streaming (greedy NFL)  and Amazon prime for my shopping and prime video ,I ordered a indoor antenna so hope to pick up loval channels  As playoffs are among us next week. I have nba league pass yearly gift from my future son in law ❤️.

pending on what channels we can pick up , maybe ditch the sling altogether .

Do you  if indoor antenna would pick up for both TVs we have? Living room and bedroom

We are a big football household, so we have YouTube TV with NFL Sunday Ticket.  We also have access to almost every other game with various streaming services.  Every once in a while we have a game blacked out, but we can often get around it with a VPN.

It depends on the antenna and the layout of your home and its environs (e.g. mountains, large buildings, etc.).  I live in a very flat terrain area, but the house is fairly large.  I mounted a big powered antenna in the attic with cable runs to just about every living space.  However, we hardly use it at all these days because we mostly use YouTube TV for local channels.

Expense wise, the digital antenna will be the cheapest option since it is a one-time cost.  You will probably need to experiment by moving the antenna around to various locations in your house to see where you get the best reception.  Be prepared to run some cable.
