Flying with a Suit?

Hey all!

I have a job interview coming up and this is the first time I need to fly somewhere and bring a suit.

It's a United Express flight on one of the smaller planes.

Any ideas?

Thank you all!

Re: Flying with a Suit?

Me Personally,

I always wear the main suit I plan to use during the flight.  As you get on the plane, the attendant in the front will most likely be courteous enough to hang your suit jacket up for you near first class.   Should they not, I've also flown for hours with the jacket rested across my leg. They recommend wearing your suit as to prevent it from wrinkling in a suitcase.  It's not the most comfortable attire for walking long airports such as JFK etc. however, it's a good alternative vs. packing it.

Also, if you google it, and have a strong desire to not wear it on the plane, there are articles about how to fold it so it does not wrinkle.  That being said, United Express flights can have limited space based on carry-on size so you may also be causing yourself a need to check a bag.  I would wear the suit and hang up the jacket. Best of luck to you!

Re: Flying with a Suit?

When I've flown United Express, it's been on a CRJ-200. UE also flies the Bombardier 700 model, as well as some Embraer planes. I generally have to gate check even my little 19" carry on.

While that speaks more directly to the smaller overhead bins, it's not a great indication for the likely availability of other storage space (like closets). The United CRJ-200 doesn't even have a First class in some configurations.

But I just pack it in its original (Brooks Bros) garment bag and put it in a checked bag. A little more expensive (unless on AA with a fee waiver) and always a little more inconvenient...but my suit looks nice and it doesn't smell bad.

When I fly with a suit, it's usually for a wedding or a funeral. Generally, that means I fly the day before the event and can let it hang up overnight before wearing it. I'm not wearing it for a same-day event. That may be relevant.

Re: Flying with a Suit?

I don't need to wear it until the next morning, so I'm going to pack it like some of the cool folding videos show. Thank you all! Smiley Happy

Re: Flying with a Suit?

I just came across this post, so my apologies for my reply not being timely.

What I have done in the past is to bring the suit in a garment bag as carry on. Then when I get to the hotel, I hang the suit in the bathroom and run the shower with hot water for 15 minutes and get it all steamy, shut off the shower and let the suit hang in the bathroom overnight. Gets most of the wrinkles out. YMMV

I suggest you roll the suit and pack it in your carry-on or checked bag.  There is a simple technique to it that you can easily find on YouTube.  It will prevent or greatly reduce wrinkles.  Any wrinkles that are suffered will hang out overnight or can be easily steamed out in the bathroom or a simple hand steamer (very worthwhile purchase).

This is exactly what I do with my business clothes; actually it's been working surprisingly well even with people doing crass things like putting their bag on top of my small folded garmet bag after I quite explicitly placed it on top of someone else's bag Smiley Happy.

Re: Flying with a Suit?

I followed a video to fold it well and it survived pretty well, I used to shower steam method and it was perfect!

Better yet, I got a job offer out of it all!

Thank you all!
