Re: Insurance Settlement questions

It just seems so unfair to me that the people get to own violent dogs that attack others. You could have been killed. I'm absolutely disgusted by what happened to you.

Thanks, yeah, it was pretty ugly, apparently the head injury was severe enough to have me listed as "Trauma Active" in the hospital.  I will not need to deal with that dog again, the owners ended up putting him down.

Re: Insurance Settlement questions

How are you doing now, a month later?  What a horrible thing to happen! I hope you fully recover.

My DH was injured and received a lump sum settlement plus a yearly (for expected life according to actuarial tables) annuity type payment. Neither were/are taxed.

The yearly annuity payment was negotiated by his attorney in addition to complete payment of all medical bills, because of expected prolonged prescription drugs which are not fully covered by Medicare. We are still grateful his attorney thought this far ahead, now that DH is retired.

Re: Insurance Settlement questions

Thanks @KatSoDak, the attack was six weeks ago today and I am in surprisingly good condition; this per all of my doctors.  I had my first neurologist appointment last Tuesday and he was adamant I "start jogging on forest trails" (yeah, "oh darn"); as it turns out, jogging is one of the very best post-concussion rehabilitation therapies known to the medical community (who knew?).  Since my appointment I've logged 27 miles and while I'm not fully recovered, my vertigo has reduced to just a moment here and there, and literally an hour ago as I was cleaning up after today's run I noticed the wound was fully closed.

At this point, other than the minor vertigo, my only realy annoyance is the groups of hematomas on my abdomen and around the leg wound where the dog chewed on me while I was unconscious.

As for the settlement, given I am not inclined to sue, and given they don't have a huge amount of insurance, I'm thinking there may not be much left over after legal and medical bills are paid; time will tell.
