That is why you build an MVP / Prototype to test the idea saving you money in cost etc at the beginning as you don't know whether it will take off or fail. MVPs cost less than $5,000.
I don't know how far they have gone building the site, but if I were in your shoes, I'd have them build it bare bones nothing fancy with the most important features. Then make it a Closed Beta where people who test the site are invited.
Generally, you can have a few of your family members and then most importantly strangers ~ 100 people. They come to the site, test it and then give you feedback. The reason why you need strangers is because they are more likely to be blunt and honest in their assessment without hurting your feelings unlike your family.
Once, you get feedback and a general idea of what people like and don't like, you then go back to the drawing board and build the site to integrate the most important functions and then go from there.
Remember, ideas are not worth anything until they are properly executed.
