OLED TV -- Severe Image retention!

4 years in - this is what my OLED LG screen looks like:LG (1).jpg

How much does it cost to replace the OLED panel out of warranty? I tried with LG and they rejected the case for "too long out of warranty". I'd really hate to throw this TV away after only 4 years!

Ouch.  My guess would be that replacing the panel would be more than the price of a newer, better TV.  I didn't realize OLED had such a huge issue with this.  Just out of curiosity, how'd it happen?  Was the screen left on some sort of home screen 24/7?  I've seen this happen to LED screens, but due to being left on the same screen for weeks.

@RobertJ As good as OLED screens are, they are more prone to image retention problems. Knowing that, I tried to be careful by not leaving a static image too long on (especially bright ones). The spots you see on there all came from playing console games which is why I am confused. The games never had static bright images.

Was games the only thing shown on the screen, bright or not? I've been advised to not show games more than 2-3 hours per day, and to let it do regular video regularly to keep retention damage to a minimum. Even if I only played a bit and then turned off the TV, I still run something else next time mine comes on to keep the same pixels from doing the same things all the time.

Does your model run pixel refresher?

@iced Yes, I ran pixel refresher many times and it didn't have any effects. I also ran many of these YouTube pixel burn-in remover videos but I don't think they're designed for OLED so they didn't help.

In 2020, when was all sat home I played all day and that's when I started to notice the burn-in get worse.

It's not worth replacing. LG panels run, depending on size and model, close to 80% of the cost of the tv new, with no discounts. On top of that, some models need the t-con board replaced along with it as it was the actual cause of the problems. If the screen has greenish spots, it was the t-con.

It's primarily an LG issue. While Sony sources their panels from LG, their strict demand for meeting their specifications means it's almost a non-issue on Sony TVs. In all the years I've done repairs, I've only come across maybe 2 or 3 bad Sony oled panels. On the other hand, LG panels got burn in all the time. If I saw an LG TV repair coming up I knew it was one of two things, either a panel replacement, or the wifi card went out. The only tv that had more panel issues were the Samsung QLEDs. Mainly 6, but also 7 series. Those Samsung's were pieces of junk.

Re: OLED TV -- Severe Image retention!

@Brian_Earl_Spilner That's good to know. I am still trying with LG to see if they would fix it for a fee. To your point, I might just invest in a new Sony OLED if I go nowhere with LG.

What would be the best way to recoup some of what I paid for the LG to put towards a new TV? I am thinking even with burn in it must have some value right?

I no longer work for best buy, but at the time, if you were a Total Tech member they would do c.o.d. repairs. You call them out for a diagnostic, pay the non-refundable fee, and they can quote you. If the parts are available they can order them and you got 20% off. They changed the plan recently so I don't know if that's a thing still. I could ask my old coworkers.

Re: OLED TV -- Severe Image retention!

Argh... And I JUST bought an LG OLED. I got it at Costco so the warranty is either 5 or 7 yrs. I forget. I hope I won't have to use it but if I do, it'd better happen before that expires.
