MV, we're on top of a hill too. In fact, we're on the top of a ridge that they scraped off to make a building site. So we don't worry about flooding, other than in Noah's Ark situations, but on the other hand, we are absolutely, exactly on grade. Any rain puddles outside on the patio have no barrier to the lower level of the house other than the 1/4" threshold strip.

edit to add: not to mention that even when the water level lowers, the bridges won't be safe for a good long while, due to washing away of their bases (= subsidence?)

I assume you still have electricity.  Do you have access to any swimming pool water?  Here in Florida, during the devastating 2004 hurricane season, many residents used swimming pool water to flush their toilets (you manually fill your toilet tank).  

It's too late now, but should you ever anticipate another disaster, try filling up your washing machine (assuming you have a top loader) with water.  I did this in 2004, and the water was suitable for hand washing.  People advise to fill up bathtubs.  However, I've filled up bathtubs and whirlpool tubs, but somehow that water eventually drains.
