I've never had an actual credit card, but I've had 3-4 debit cards. Never signed the back of any of them.
Never has a blank back been an issue either.
Most of the time, the signing the back of the card is actually included in the cardmember agreement. So not signing it is a violation of said agreement.
I sign the back of mine because there is a chance that someone will catch a signature discrepancy. It is not likely, but without that it is 0% likely.

interesting point
And also the merchant agreement they are suppose to match the signature on the back with your receipt, however I no longer sign my cards either LOL since there not signed the post office makes me show ID, and a couple merchants
I never sign the back of my cards...I've always been told it can make it easier to have fraudulent charges made since someone can copy your signature then. I either leave it blank or put CID in the signature box. However, I've found that no one actually ever asks me for ID to verify my identity.
Also a security issue. It amazes me why people don't want to follow card agreement for their own security.
Once again, the showing of ID is not required and they cannot deny the charge for lack of providing ID.

There is a school of thought, as mentioned by earlier poster, that the signing of the back of the card actually lessens your security as it provides would be thiefs with access to your signature to copy.
I sign in fine point blue Sharpie so it doesn't fade like my signature did on my debit card.
