A friend has student loans being garnished. They called and set up a rehab of them. The fifth month is July. They were debating not filing their taxes until then, thinking they could get around them being garnished and hopefully still get a return. Does that work?
If they owe taxes, they will of course already have to pay them. But they should be able to find for an extension that will allow them to extend the deadline to October (?). This should give them enough time to finish the rehab. Afterwards it probably wouldn't hurt to contact the offset Dept to make sure it's removed. They should discuss this part best with their tax professional
I would also check the NSLDS website to make sure all the loans were included.
