Federal student loan question

Hi is it possible to transfer my son's federal student loans into my name? If so what are some good companies to go with? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: Federal student loan question

Why would you want to do this?

Student loans do not hurt credit if they are paid properly.

You can make payments for him without moving the accounts.

My wife has 827 fico8 overall, with 850 fico8 for credit cards and car loans.

She has 6 figure student loans (PSLF)

Rebuild started in 2014  -  $100k unsecured credit in 2017  -  $500k unsecured credit in 2024.

Re: Federal student loan question

Federal loans can't be transferred like that.

You could apply for a new private loan covering the payoff amount and then pay off his loan with your payout, effectively transferring debt.  Then you'll have the loan in your own name to contend with (no federal protections/programs, though).  It might be easier for you to just pay his loans (either automatic EFT/debit or get his log in information to do it yourself), and then he'd also be building positive credit history that way.  Plus if he qualifies for any forgiveness programs, that would still be an option.
