AU experiment & score drops from small balance to $0 balance

Okay so I said I'd do this 8 weeks ago. Two months ago I noticed my scores drop when my only AU account went from a small balance reported to a zero balance.

On 11/10 my statement for the AU account updated with a $0 balance coming from $150 the month before, so I pulled my scores the next day on 11/11 in preparation for it being updated to the bureaus. I just got an update a few hours ago that TU updated the balance now from $150 to $0 today, on 11/14.

I pulled a 1 bureau report, TU, to see the score fluctuations. TU is the only one updated so far.

Here is my stats on 11/11 report:

Accounts/Utilization/Age:

NFCU Secured nRewards CC - $0/$200 - 6 mos
CSE FCU Auto Loan - $16,412/$18,047 - 8 mos
CSE FCU Platinum Rewards CC - $0/$15,000 - 8 mos
NFCU Shared Pledge Loan - $239/$3,001 - 8 mos
Capital One Platinum CC (PC'd to Quicksilver) - $10/$500 - 1 yr, 1 month
(AU) KeyBank Key2More Rewards CC - $150/$7,500 - 6 yrs, 6 mos

AAoA/AoYA/AoOA/HPs

AAoA - 9 mos
AoYA - 6 mos
AoOA - 1yr, 1 month
HPs - 7

The only difference between 11/11 and 11/14 is,

(AU) KeyBank Key2More Rewards CC - $150/$7,500 - 6 yrs, 6 mos

going to

(AU) KeyBank Key2More Rewards CC - $0/$7,500 - 6 yrs, 6 mos

Re: 16pt drop on TU when AU CC was paid down to zero, DPs provided

Is reacting predictably for the older scores where you’re seeing a boost for lowering your number of revolvers with a balance from 50 to 25%. But what’s up with version eight and nine?

If the card counts they should be going up, if the card doesn’t count they shouldn’t be doing anything! That is an enigma.

I wonder what would happen if 1. the Quicksilver reported zero which should give you the no revolving penalty, (that it looks like you just got), and then if 2. you report a balance on the AU card and see if you get points and how many.

I’ll be interested in hearing what others have to say. And I’ll be interested in seeing what happens at the other bureaus.

I've noticed this, too. I have one AU (CAP1 that's not listed in my sig) and whenever it posts a zero balance (and I have balances on my own cards, it doesn't matter whether it's AZEO or more than one) I lose ~15 pts. I think as soon as the AU posts a zero balance, it's almost like the entire AU card is being completely excluded. As soon as I report a balance on the AU card, the points I lost are returned.

Here's my original thread where I noticed this:

Drwaz99 If you lose 15 when it reports zero what happens when your other cards also report zero? Do you get the additional no revolving balance penalty?

What happens when you use that AU card as your AZEO card?

It's been a couple of months, but if I recall correctly, I lost about 25 pts total on EX when that happened (I didn't intentionally do it, but there was a brief moment between statement cuts where there were all zero balances). But I don' think it's due to "no revolving balance" being scored twice but rather the AU card's history is being completely discounted. (my CAP1 AU has is 26 yrs old and it hurts my AAoA significantly when it posts zero)

I've never had the AU be the AZEO card but I will definitely try that out after the beginning of the year when I get through Xmas shopping.

Thanks for responding. I wonder why it does that. Interesting theory. Like if its not being used, it doesn't count. does it do this across all score flavors and CRAs?

I have no idea about scorecards. No derogs; 7 total accounts including the AU account (but 6 at the time of my examples above); AoOA is 3yrs (26 yrs for the AU); AAoA is 1y6mo (5yr6mo with AU); AoYA currently 3mo and was roughly the same with examples above.
