I have a friend who has 2 student loans, both less than 1 year old. The loans' status was deferred.
There are no other credit lines on her report. Only inquiries were from the loans.
I was surprised when her Credit Karma scores were in the 560ish range. Does that sound right?
It seems kind of low to me because there are no negatives on the account (unless student loans are considered bad until they start getting paid).
I encouraged her to apply for her first credit card. She was not approved for a Discover it card but was approved for a Discover Secured card. Once the credit card reported, her CK scores rose 100+ points each.
Your friend had an extremely short credit history with very few accounts and no credit cards during which time she had not made even one payment on any account.
Looked at that way, does that shed some light on why she would have had low scores?
No credit mix and no payment history. She's lucky she had a score at all.
