How long until something is removed from your credit report?

I have an account that was closed in 1998 and it is still showing up on my credit report (as closed).  I thought that closed accounts were removed after some period of time.  Is that not the case?  If it is, how many years?

What kind of account? Is it a derog?

Assuming it is, I would dispute as it has been 7 years.

It was a student loan that I transfered and it had nothing negative.

10 years then. Just leave it be. It  probably has little affect on your score anyway.

7 years from when it went late. However, with lates GW is always worth a shot.
