I'm sure this one's been asked before, but....

Like everyone else, I'm working to raise my score.  I returned a leased vehicle during a divorce period, knowing it would show as negative, but having no choice.  My report now shows me having 6,000 owed to this company and the co. considering it a charge off/ bad debt. I've read all the info on re: how paying off old debts has often negative results, and how waiting for the "ding" to pass is best.  QUESTION: Would it be benefitial to send owed company divorce papers stating that I am legally only responsible for 3,000? Would that benefit the score?

Unfortunately it really won't. Most creditors could care less what happened after the credit was extended. The only benefit would be if you could get them to reduce the overall balance and settle that balance. Then the paid off amount will eventually result in your score improving.
