I guess my concern is that me paying and them updating might actually hurt my score since right now it's only a 30 day late. Would them updating it to paid but 150 plus days late for years look worse?
Not necessarily. A charge off is the worst, defined as:
"A declaration by a creditor (usually a credit card account) that an amount of debt is unlikely to be collected. This occurs when a consumer becomes severely delinquent on a debt. Traditionally, creditors will make this declaration at the point of six months without payment."
Any lender that sees a charge off notation is going to automatically assume that it was 180+ late. Also - lenders see what's on your paper reports. Order your paper reports so you can see what they see. A charge-off at 30 days makes zero sense so they will likely assume it's a reporting error anyway. Upon manual review, an unpaid charge-off looks worse than a paid charge off. You're basically telling lenders you won't even bother to pay a $54 debt.
Well said.
Seriously though -- order your paper reports. You'll have access to much more accurate information about your credit than what you get online and it will help you make better decisions about how to handle these adverse accounts.
Ordered them. Thanks for your insights. It's a measley 54 bucks, just wanted to make sure I took care of it properly.
