Should I deal with a collection agency?

I have two collection account on my credit history.  Once in awhile I read letters that suggest I write to the collection agency and tell them, I will not work with them on the debt, but I choose to deal with the creditor.  Is this a good thing, and if so Why?

How old are the collections? Who is the CA? Who is the OC? Can you pay them in full?

Re: Should I deal with a collection agency?

The collection are over 3 year old, and in the next few month I feel I should be able to pay them off.  This why I want to know who to deal with and how I should go about it.  Both collection are medical, one for $500 and one for $1400..  I am hoping to negotiate the $1400 down to $1000.

If you can deal directly with the OC then you should. If you have to deal with the CA and it's over 3 years then I would start with a 50% PFD and see if it works before you offer 1k........Who are the CAs?

Re: Should I deal with a collection agency?

I would try to offer a PFD to the CA, but I am not sure how willing they are to negotiate for a lesser amount for this option.  You can try to deal with the OC, but I doubt they will deal with you after 3 years, but it is worth a try.

The PFD could be especially effective if it is past the SOL (google search to find your state's info on this).

Good luck

Re: Should I deal with a collection agency?

A couple people here recently posted about luck gettin IC systems off their reports. Do a search on them and see what comes up. You might be able to see what others did.
