Some years back I heard an interview with an Olympic swimmer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nancy_Hogshead-Makar) who wrote a book about coping with asthma as a competitive athlete: many of the most effective medications are also stimulants and therefore banned, constraining her range of treatment options, and she had to become very good at recognizing her triggers so as to avoid them in the hours before competitions. Not to hijack the thread but Interesting read. I've had asthma my entire life and it's easily triggered by allergies and exercise. I've been on an inhaled steroid since I can remember to control it (thank god for advair - wish it was around when I was a kid). Its been years since I've had a full blown attack though in my youth up to my late teens I was in the emergency room at least once a year. I wish I'd known about athletes such as her when I was younger because it would have really inspired me. I played sports but had a heck of a time and the thought of quitting would pass through my mind every time we had to run sprints. I’ll be sure to pass this knowledge to my kids should they be unfortunate to receive the Asthma genes from me (I sure hope not!). By the way, thanks for the congrats! It's our first and we're very excited! :)
